A charming, plant-filled houseboat docked on a quiet canal.
As you cruise past, you'll see people drinking coffee on their deck or watching TV in their living rooms, floating just inches above the water. Who are they?

  ## A Solution to a Housing Crisis
After WWII, Amsterdam had a severe housing shortage. Old cargo ships were cheap, and the canals were empty. People started converting ships into homes. What started as a necessity became a bohemian lifestyle choice in the 60s and 70s.

  ## Modern Luxury
Today, living on a houseboat is expensive. Permits are limited (capped around 2,500) and highly coveted.

  ## Types of Houseboats
  1. **The Ark:** A concrete rectangular barge. Not pretty, but spacious and stable.
  2. **Converted Ships:** Old iron freight ships. Beautiful and historic, but require constant maintenance (painting, removing rust).

**Want to see inside?** Visit the **Houseboat Museum** on the Prinsengracht. It's a preserved 1914 freighter class ship you can tour to see how spacious they actually are.
